Archie!

Archie, was surrendered to PDWRA with his brother Benny, who we wrote about a few weeks ago. One of our volunteers Hannah, who also has pugs, fell in love with him from the moment she saw him at her local park with his foster Sue. She had seen them both through dentals, as well as Archie having to have a dreaded graft procedure from an ulcer. Sue already had an adopted PDWRA pug, Alfie, and as we often find, was considering adopting but couldn’t manage both of them. Archie was 11 years old and had ongoing and progressive healthcare needs that Hannah was willing to manage, so she jumped at the opportunity to discuss with us, giving him his forever home.

Hannah updates us:”I’m so happy to say our golden oldie Archie is settling in well. It was all a bit strange for him at first having two new brothers and one new sister in our home and for the first few weeks at night, he needed either me or hubby Joe, to lay with him whilst he settled, but we didn’t mind as we got extra snuggles with him!

His eye is healing now ulcer-free, however, unfortunately it was soon followed by an ulcer in his other eye! Thankfully, I spotted it straight away, knowing the signs, having been through it a few times with my other pugs, so got him to vets quickly. It was treated in the usual way with endless drops and was gone in one week ..thank goodness 😅

He’s getting on well with his new siblings and puts them in their place by doing what we call the death stare 😳 should he feel they need it, and especially if they’re in the spot where he wants to relax. Stevie our other PDWRA rescue took a bit more time learning to love Archie – simply because he loves and craves all the attention and didn’t want to share his mum and dad with anyone else, let alone someone new! But he’s more than happy to let Archie lick his ears and get in bed with him now.

Like most pugs Archie absolutely loves his food and feels no shame about barking at 5:45am every morning to let us know he’s ready for his breakfast! There’s often a little gift waiting for us in the morning also, as he hasn’t got much awareness of his bowel functions, especially if he’s excited or when I pick him up.

It’s also so lovely that his brother Benny only lives a ten-minute walk from our house, which means they still get to see each other. We really did consider taking them both, but it would have been too much. And with our resident Stevie, I know how jealous he gets and how much attention the others need – it wouldn’t be fair to take that much attention away from each of them. All in all, we feel both Archie and Benny have landed on their paws and we adore our little snuggle monster!”.

Fred & Mollie

Fred came to the UK from the Far East, with his original parents. Their family was expanding and they came to the very difficult decision to surrender him to PDWRA when they realised that they could no longer give him the attention he deserved. One of our adoptive families who were willing to foster him, went to collect him.  All his belongings were ready outside, food, bedding, toys etc. and his Mum was too upset to say goodbye. It was absolutely heart-breaking for all concerned.

His fosterer Cheryl tells us, “Unfortunately, when Fred first arrived he did have a number of health issues that needed attending to. He’s such a beautiful boy and we knew we just couldn’t let him be adopted. We had to keep him. We knew he’d get a beautiful home but made the decision that he wasn’t going anywhere. Thankfully there was no argument from our Area Coordinator, Dee who placed our resident pug Mollie, with us 3 years ago. She knew we could give him a perfect forever home too. We just hadn’t been on the adoption waiting list as we hadn’t considered it, until Fred!

With lots of love and care, time and patience, a change of diet and medication, he blossomed. His skin became healthier and he’s so much happier living life to the full. Mollie, is half his size, but bosses him around which he just takes in his stride. He’s so laid back and nothing phrases him. The best things we ever did was to adopt Mollie and foster Fred.

We can’t thank our Area Coordinator Dee, and everyone within the PDWRA family, enough. They have been absolutely amazing and we are so blessed to have two beautiful pugs in our lives. Xx “

Yorkshire doggy take-aways!

“Adorable pugs tuck into ‘doggy takeaways’ during PDWRA event at Village Pizza in Leeds”. The Yorkshire Post reported. A group of lucky pugs got their noses stuck into doggy takeaways during a pizza party this weekend.

Six pooches and their owners were invited to taste the new ‘Village Paws’ menu, carefully designed for dogs.
Animal lover and Village Pizza owner, Liam, designed the Village Paws menu with his own dog in mind. The menu includes beef and chicken dinner boxes, a frozen yoghurt dessert and even beer and ‘pawsecco’ designed for pooches.

PDWRA’s Yorkshire re-homing coordinator, Lisa, told the Yorkshire Post: “We loved the idea that Liam was launching these doggy takeaways and he invited us to go along and try them.
“My pug Bruce loved it, especially the ice cream – he had his nose stuck in the tub for a long time!”

Liam has donated doggy beer and prosecco to a pug wedding organised by the charity in August, where loved-up Percy and Mabel will tie the knot after meeting at a PDWRA event.

Working with local businesses has been a lifeline for the charity this year, as it has been left without the cash flow of its usual fundraising events. No one at the charity is paid and volunteers such as Lisa juggle full time jobs while giving up their time to help, reported Abbey Maclure.

We thank everyone involved, for keeping spirits up and having fun while raising awareness and much-needed funds!

We are Open for New Adoption & Foster Applications!

With lockdown restrictions easing and changing circumstances for owners and pugs, we are now able to Re-Open for New Applications to Adopt or Foster!

As we will still be relying on video home-checking, and working to the changing guidelines, waiting-times for applicants may vary.

We sincerely thank all of those who have waited patiently to rehome a rescued pug.

We are Always Open to accept pugs needing to be surrendered to us.

Applications to Volunteer can also be made. Do consider joining, in our valuable efforts for Pugs in Need. Thank You!

Pugsley & Bruno enjoy their new found friendship!

Bruno was adopted earlier this year. Since then, he’s moved house, become friends with the resident chickens and begun to make friends with another resident pug. Some big changes for the little man!

Bruno’s new brother, Pugsley has had his health issues through the years. Recently though, he has had a tumour removed and since discovered a cyst on his spine so will be going back under the knife soon.

Bruno has stepped up though and helped look after Pugsley in his time of need, giving him a new lease of life when he’s needed it most. Bruno knows when to play with Pugsley and when to play with his toys. He knows when he needs a cuddle and when to give him space.

They have both grown extremely close in a relatively short space of time and look for each other on their walks. Pugsley was a little grumpy, has now come out of his shell and is an overall happier dog.

Sometimes a rescue dog who needs help can actually help other dogs! They have mental health that needs to be cared for too.”

Toby-licious down on the farm!

We recently spotted Toby among the pigs on his adoptive parents’ farm. Mum, Anita tells us how he’s been getting on there:

“Ours is a free-range for pigs and cattle plus we grow strawberries, so Toby soon had to learn to listen & behave after his arrival!😅
I recall his first 9 hr-day, he was exhausted, after a week he was glad I was there to look after him. After some training he quickly became very much My boy. He follows me everywhere, he jumps onto my ATV bike and stays on it while I’m busy, just watching us all work. Toby knows when it’s safe to join in, in between riding on tractors and running around with the piglets. He checks all the livestock and staff with me! 😉

When it’s too cold or he’s exhausted he becomes an office pug, accompanying Dad who runs a photography business. You can imagine how popular Toby is with his many friends looking forward to seeing him there, and to play with him.

He came to us with some issues as you’d expect facing a brand new environment, and never liked cars on the street, but it isn’t often he has to deal with that. He loves country life and recently had a beach adventure, enjoying coastal walks with doggie friends. We love him so much and occupy every minute he’s awake. We cuddle and sleep with Toby at night, who wouldn’t?  We thank you PDWRA for Tobylicious, he’s absolutely delicious!” 😍😘🐾

Temporary Foster Dora

PDWRA received a call asking if we did anything such as temporary fostering. Dora’s owner was struggling to give her the attention she needed, having a young family with a new baby to look after too. As we did have the volunteers available in this area we were able to help.

We organised Dora’s collection, and she spent 6 weeks on holiday with a volunteer foster carer, where she had a lovely time with fellow rescue pug, Prince. In that time, our PDWRA veterinary advisor gave advice on Dora’s diet, skin and eye issues which the owner felt was lacking from her own vet’s.

She was returned safe and sound to her loving home and the owners were so delighted with the care she received, along with the advice given, that they have set up a monthly donation to PDWRA to show their gratitude, for which we’re highly appreciative.

A wonderful happy outcome for all concerned! 💞🐾

Kevin, Nellie, Peggy & Angel

😍 Here’s a most delightful picture update 😍 on bonded-pair Kevin and Nellie with Peggy and Angel all together, adopted into their happy home in Northern Ireland.

Their journeys began in England when they came to PDWRA, fostered until the right home was found for them at the time, pre-covid. Peggy in particular had severe health issues requiring a number of surgeries and extensive care that our supporters rallied to help with.

They are a perfect reminder of what our network of dedicated area coordinators, fosterers, transporters and fundraisers across the UK, are able to achieve, to meet the needs for these deserving souls. We couldn’t be happier for all of them! 🤗💖🐾

Louey – Run Free!

We had to say goodbye to our gorgeous little foster pug Louey. We took him into our hearts last September and we totally fell in love with him.💖

Thankfully, he went peacefully, but he has left our hearts broken.💔
Run free little one, on the other side of the rainbow 🌈 bridge.
🐾
Mummy, Sian.

Thank you Sian and James, from all at PDWRA,
for loving and caring for Louey, in the too-short-a-time you had with him.

Jelly & gang – the best therapy for anyone!

We’ve told the inspiring story of rescue pugs; Jelly, found on the streets, alone, and Bodhi, who was kept outdoors until we found their perfect home together, finding great comfort in each other. However, it doesn’t end there as their Mum works in a refuge for a domestic abuse service, and Jelly especially, contributes to the lives there too!

They both go to work with Mum and while Bodhi is less interested in other people, only his cuddle buddy Jelly, she does the rounds, hopping from lap to lap. Jelly joins in sessions with the children, keeping them company, enjoying sharing hugs, allowing them to stroke and cuddle her, when they are feeling anxious.🤗

Even more enjoyable for everyone at the refuge, is that another PDWRA adopter works there, taking Peggy and Dobby, seen here arriving by car – so the office is full of rescue pugs!

They are a big part of the human rescue team and the children that arrive are told about them in advance. They make pictures and tell their stories on the walls and they’re taught all about dog safety. Peggy and Dobby are fantastic little characters too. Peggy recently underwent BOAS surgery but in no time is back to herself, playing with everyone.

As both Mums, having such challenging work, they too take great comfort from their gorgeous pugs!

All four are living healthy and happy lives, as they should, hard to think of Jelly left on the streets, now worshipped by her family and priceless to them. 💖💝🐾

Thank You to Fundraiser Mandy Solomon!

🤗 An enormous “Thank You” 🤗 to our kind, supporter Mandy Solomon, who made & sold these beautiful decoupage bottle lights to benefit PDWRA.
Mandy achieved this through a Facebook Birthday Fundraiser, raising an amazing £505! 💖

She has painted pebbles before & eggs for Easter. What an amazingly talented & generous friend to PDWRA, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
Thank You Mandy! 🐾

Jellyfish, from the streets to living the dream!

PDWRA have some amazing Super-Hero pugs, who have really been through the mill in life, but thankfully we’ve been able to play a part in turning things around for them, along with the loving determination of our fosterers & adopters.

Jellyfish is one of these.

Jelly was found by a dog warden, dumped out on the streets and was due to be sent to a shelter with a reputation for a high rate of euthanasia for dogs that needed medical care. Thankfully, someone at the shelter knew of PDWRA and made contact. Jelly was in a terrible state with 2 luxating patellas and rotated hips, suggesting she may have always been kept in a crate. She was under 5kg and has been used for breeding.
The poor condition of her legs meant that she walked like a crab and her whole rear end was bald and the skin hardened and sore – likely from sitting in her own urine. Jelly was in foster for a very long time and had surgery on each knee followed by hydro and physio therapy before she was adopted.

She’s now at home with another rescue pug and although buddy, Bodhi, isn’t interested in other company, Jelly is allowed to cuddle up!

The other amazing thing about Jelly is what she has done for Bodhi. He is a rescue too, and was always kept outside. When he was adopted he was petrified of the wind and rain, and would cry and vomit through fear when we had noisy weather – he couldn’t be left to sleep alone. That’s why Jelly’s adopters were looking for a second dog. Since Jelly’s arrival her buddy hasn’t had a bad night. As long as he has Jelly he can sleep through gale force winds!
They truly are survivors, with their pasts behind them they are enjoying the best life, as they always deserved. 💝🐾
