💔 Ava was laid to rest on 6th September. 💔
Unfortunately, the challenges life gave her became too much so it was the right decision to help her across the rainbow Bridge. 🌈
She was doubly incontinent and had been born with spinal abnormalities that had required surgery.
PDWRA had invested in Physiotherapy to help Ava gain strength in her legs to try and keep her mobile. This had been of great benefit to her but earlier this year it became apparent that she was losing strength in her back legs. Her quality of life deteriorated over the summer months and it also became clear she had limited vision.

Ava had a wonderful spirit of determination and a love for everyone around her. She had the most beautiful face with expressions it was difficult not to adore. It was sad to witness her deterioration and withdrawal from the things that she had enjoyed in her life like playing with her PDWRA sister, Annie.
It was a pleasure to care for Ava for nearly 3 years and I miss her dreadfully.
I like to think of her running around on her new legs across the rainbow bridge with all her PDWRA family 🤗💞
Ava’s Mum,
Josie

Thank you to PDWRA pug owner Lynn, who took it upon herself to hold a fundraising stall at her local village fun day. Here she is with daughter Gemma who raised and donated over £100 from their kind efforts! 🤗
Lynn has a grumble of her own at home, including a deaf pug from adopting a handsome father & son pair.
Their thoughtful, generosity and support, is much appreciated by the PDWRA & our pugs in need! 💞🐾

In the blue chariot we have two lovely golden girls. At the front is Pepper, collected from the RSPCA on a cold December evening.
Pepper is 14, unable to walk, with recurrent urine infections and is doubly incontinent. PDWRA looked after most of her healthcare expenses while her devoted foster Mum, Helen, gave her the care she needed. We looked for an equally dedicated forever home but foster Mum decided to adopt Pepper and there truly couldn’t be a more suitable home for her!
To the rear of Pepper in her chariot, is Ruby, collected by the same PDWRA Area-Coordinator from a family home. Ruby will also soon be 14. She has mobility issues and struggles to walk plus is similarly, doubly incontinent. Helen offered to travel cross-country to collect Ruby to foster and is one of those special people who can’t do enough to help including incurring a lot of costs herself. Ruby’s surrender was a very sad experience, as her parents had owned her since a puppy. Sadly, they had a young child who was very ill and any risk of infection from Ruby was too great. However, these two dears became the best companions for each other and Ruby will be remaining there, in her forever home too!

Without the most amazing foster carers, who often drop everything to help pugs in need, follow veterinary management of their care diligently and helped with the donations we receive throughout the year, we wouldn’t be able to give the best lives for deserving souls like these wonderful old dears!
Please donate whenever you can, it will always be appreciated!💕🐾

One of our lovely adoptive homes now, who had sadly lost their beloved pug Pippa to cancer at only 6 years old, hadn’t ever considered a rescue pug, but were put in touch with their local PDWRA Coordinator Jane. She told them about Hughie, who had a brother Louie, both surrendered by an elderly owner who had them since puppies but could no longer cope with them. They were very active & naughty together, 😆 though could be independent from each other too!

They went to see Hughie at his foster home & it was love at first sight! Hughie’s adoptive Mum tells us:
❤️ Hughie soon settled in with us; however, it soon became apparent that Hughie needed a little more training; he hated skateboards motorbikes other dogs trundling suitcases and the doorbell! He has improved, but the doorbell is still a work in progress! 😬 He really is the most loving boy though and I thought he would make a great therapy dog. I found a care home that would take him and Hughie was assessed by the vet (fortunately no doorbell at the vets! 😅). He passed with flying colours, but then Covid happened.

I’m looking forward to visiting the home once I am able to, with Hughie. I’m sure the residents will love him as much as we do. Meantime, he now has an older brother Frank and they absolutely adore each other! ❤️

Ziggy’s family sadly had to say goodbye to him. 💔
His Dad, Nik writes to us to say, “Ziggy had been under close monitoring by our vet for the last couple of years due to his back legs failing him. After becoming doubly incontinent and more recently over the last 3 weeks his front legs starting to weaken, we realized that his quality of life was nowhere near what he deserved so we took the decision to have him pass over to rainbow bridge to be with his wifey Mabel.
We adopted them as a couple from PDWRA and he blessed us with 6 wonderful years. We like to imagine him now frolicking in fields of gold with her forever and all our other dog companions. Thank you to all at the PDWRA who let us adopt them. x ”
We all send our sincere condolences to Ziggy’s family and thank them for giving a bonded-pair a wonderful life together.

Mr Wilson has been looking forward to this music festival since lockdown prevented him from enjoying events like he used to. This will be his 2nd though, since being adopted by PDWRA volunteer Emma.
He’s used to plenty of outdoor activities and sports including marathons and agility competitions.
But how smart does he look in his festive harness!? Looks like he’s having the best time, deservedly so! 😍🐾

National Dog Day, is observed annually on August 26. It honours family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day – protecting our families and homes, for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and helping to locate and rescue victims of accidents and tragedy.
This day was founded by author and animal behaviourist, Colleen Paige in 2004. She started this annual recognition day to not only show appreciation for dogs, but to bring attention to the plight of abused dogs and to end puppy farms among other welfare issues.
However, we don’t need an excuse to celebrate our pugs every day do we?!

The Big Event was covered extensively by the Press this week. Here’s another delightful image of the happy couple from the Daily Star!
Meantime, the total has been tallied up and ** Percy and Mabel’s wedding raised a massive £2,227.89 for PDWRA 🐾**
Enormous thanks go to everyone who supported, and organised their Charity Wedding last Sunday in West Yorkshire. Generously donating time, services, raffle prizes or buying tickets and dressing up for the big event, it made for a wonderfully happy day for all, and an amazing fundraising achievement too!
Thanks to Lisa & Jodie from PDWRA Yorkshire and the team of volunteers lead by Amanda, Percy & Mabel’s Mums Julie & Danii plus so many others who contributed. 👏👌💖
From all the PDWRA pugs, helped every day! 💕🐾

💖 Percy & Mabel 💖 who met in a park in Leeds 2 years ago became inseparable ever since, have now tied the knot in a fun-filled ceremony in West Yorkshire organised by PDWRA’s local fundraising team & pug parents Julie & Danii. They have since set up their own local pug group, Shibden Pugs, who also kindly fundraise for PDWRA.
Covered by national & regional press, 80 guests with 30 pugs saw the bride & groom arrive at the glamorous wedding venue, the Office in Brighouse in a convertible BMW. Best man Arthur and bridesmaid Coco, also pugs, accompanied them for the ride!
A beautifully decorated dog-friendly wedding cake was served with fizzy ‘paw-secco’ and the best day was had by all.

With many donated and raffled items, the team will be totting-up the total funds raised from such a special, happy event for other pugs in need. We wish them every happiness!🥂🍰🎁💌💝🐾

Stella was surrendered to PDWRA as her owners weren’t able to care for her special needs. She had wobbly legs, suffered from incontinence and unfortunately, was obese. She needed a special family to take care of her, which we found. They worked to trim her down, and this has helped enormously with her mobility and weak legs.
Her mum is so pleased with her progress she said “Stella used to walk with her bottom sloped towards the ground because she couldn’t take the weight on her back legs. She’s now walking perfectly with just a bit of a limp from her dodgy leg and she runs now too!! We can even see a waist appearing!” 😉👏
Stella can get to the fridge quicker than anyone if she knows there’s fish in there!!! She starts spinning round with excitement 😁. She loves a trip to the seaside and can get across a beach in no time! She takes herself off for a paddle too then sits down in the water and lets the smaller waves break over her back.
Stella’s so responsive when you talk to her but her facial expressions make it look like you’re telling her the best bit of gossip ever!”
She’s a beautiful girl and we’re so happy that Stella’s now able to get the most out of life, and with her fantastic forever family. 💝

By Anne:
When I get a phone call from another PDWRA volunteer that starts with “Helen told me to give you a call”…. I never know what’s coming next!
This time it was to see if I would take a 3 year old male pug with behavioural issues. He had bouts of aggression outside the home and his owners were struggling to deal with him. He had lived with other members of their family for much of his life, and discovering this change in him after he returned, had to think long and hard before deciding to surrender him to PDWRA as they knew an experienced and capable home would be found for him.
So, off I went, as I couldn’t resist a challenge! I arrived at the house to collect him and after standing outside for the best part of ten minutes out came a raging black pug with a full-face muzzle ready to attack the world! I got him in the back of my car and headed for home!

Now I’ve worked with dogs for over 30 years and have seen many things but never have I seen a dog as broken as Gazza. I got him out of the car and removed the muzzle, took him into the garden and let him go, five hours later he was still sitting at the furthest point away from the house barking at any person he could see moving, just wouldn’t come near anyone, or even look at anyone, eventually I got him into the house, he actually tip-toed around the edge of the room, he was so frightened he didn’t want anyone to notice him. For 2 days he refused all attempts to feed him, he was covered in fleas despite being told he’d been treated!
On the 3rd day he ate his tea and was brave enough to crawl across the floor to lie at my feet, though still wouldn’t have anything to do with his new Dad, just legged it out of the house to the top of the garden as soon as he walked into the room. It was almost 3 weeks before he could touch Gazza. During this time no pressure was put on him to do anything he didn’t want to do.

Finally, I decided it was time to take him out. He was petrified, even with my very confident pugs around him, he lunged at people, barking all the time. He was fine if dogs didn’t get too close but terrified if they did. I did question if it was worth taking him out as he was so stressed. But I felt he did get some benefit, so we continued. Luckily where I walk, I am well known and everyone was brilliant in trying to build his confidence,. He stopped his barking and just tried to rush past people, huffing under his breath which was actually quite funny!
Just over 2 months later he’s been on a caravan holiday, greets visitors both human and canine coming into the house, never ever wears a muzzle, runs free off the lead when it’s suitable, has just about stopped lunging at anyone or anything, doesn’t bark or huff! His stress levels are much less though still learning and is by no means a perfect pug, but who wants perfection anyway?! 😉

I know the owner tried other rescues who refused to take him because of his behaviour. Thank goodness for PDWRA, who knows what would have happened otherwise!? As I sit here writing this, he’s stretched out on a dog bed, fast asleep with his little pink pig under his chin, thank goodness for pug welfare, all the wonderful people who welcome the pugs into their homes to get them ready for a new life, everyone who donates towards that care and takes part in all the wonderful fundraising, the trustees for keeping the ship sailing, as without them all, PDWRA wouldn’t exist, neither would the phone calls that start with, Helen suggested I give you a call……” 💝🐾
