ππWishing Elvis, one of our treasured golden-oldies in the PDWRA family, huge 15th birthday celebrations! ππ
Elvis enjoys living with one of our larger grumble families and is a most worthy ambassador for the rehoming work of PDWRA, don’t you think?! ππ€ππΎ

It’s Pugtober 15th!
Who needs an excuse to celebrate, or share how wonderful our pugs are, however as they are so special, October 15th, every year is dedicated to them!

This is Ellie. Her story is of a brave young lady who rescued her from a dreadful life and potentially falling into the wrong hands again, onto her road to recovery, now in our care.
A young mum of 2 very young children answered an advert on the internet for a healthy 3 year old lively pug. She turned up to find a very distressed much older pug, riddled with fleas, with large lumps on her body and had been used as a breeding machine. The young mum made the decision to part with hundreds of pounds just to get her out of there as she didnβt have the heart to leave her.
Ellie was taken straight to the vet, which costed even more than she could afford but she felt she needed to be seen immediately. She then rang us to ask whether PDWRA would take her in so she would be safe forever.
So far, Ellie’s medical issues are many, from eye ulceration, teeth needing extracting, to severe BOAS, lumps that could be cysts or tumours plus a large hernia hanging between her legs. She was covered in flea dirt with overgrown nails so received her first grooming in the loving care of her fosterer in a safe, warm home. She is scared by raised men’s voices and the back door being shut if she is outside – We believe she used to be shut outside on concrete for up to 15 hours a day. Ellie didnβt even possess a harness or lead when she was collected. π
Ellie can’t be exercised either until she has surgery. This is where we need your help please!
Any donation large or small, will add up to help Ellie to receive the treatment she needs, quickly, to ease her discomfort and start to heal. Our vet bills are increasing every month as more pugs like Ellie are needing our help.
You can donate at: https://pugwelfare-rescue.org.uk/donating-to-pug-dog-welfare/
Please use the reference: Ellie.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and Ellie’s, and will keep you updated on her journey to recovery. ππΎ

PDWRA would like to say an enormous, and ongoing “Thank You!” to an amazing, fundraising supporter of ours, Ammy Pug-Hatter, who with the support of husband Tim and family, regularly dedicates and donates the proceeds of their auctions & games to our pugs in need. She has sent us nearly Β£800 in the last few months plus has knitted glorious Halloween & Xmas puggie woolies for further fundraising, at our own events!

Ammy started fundraising about 5 years ago when she rescued her first pug & discovered the work we did for pugs too. As our experience, her grumble has come from a variety of situations, which she explains;
“Ruby came from a lovely family but they just had no time for her. She has neurological issues which thankfully never got any worse.
Similarly with Pom-bear, her owner didn’t have the time for her. She’s been fighting a battle with cancer since.

Ernie came from same shelter that PDWRA rescued a little pug from. He is nearly blind & deaf, totally unsocialised or house trained. He has had an awful life, abused, neglected, locked away & likely used for breeding until he was thrown on the streets almost blind & very thin at 10/11yrs old. That’s where he was found, as a stray. Even after 2 yrs here we are still getting him to trust us. He doesn’t understand that stroking & being picked up are good things and still growls about it! But we won’t ever give up on him, it’s all part & parcel of rescuing. He’s fine with the other pugs now, even if they’re squabbling. It’s people he doesn’t trust and has become a Daddy’s boy! We can’t imagine what he’s been through.

I know there are many more like him but knowing there are places like PDWRA who will take them in and take the time to help them to heal & trust and find loving new homes for them, helps me sleep at night. I couldn’t do any of my work without all the kind & generous lovely friends in my facebook auction group who support PDWRA & other rescues for brachycephalic breeds that I fundraise for; https://www.facebook.com/groups/115394289050108/

I often get offered the poorly older dogs so it’s good to know I have somewhere to take them to. I want people to know about the wonderful work PDWRA does! xxx”

Joseph came to us as a puppy, with an amputated deformed forelimb, which he was born with. He was adopted by devoted new parents and we supported them through the years, while Joseph had ongoing physiotherapy. Unfortunately, though he recently developed arthritis in his remaining elbow, which became fused making it hard for him to move. Joseph struggled to walk and his abnormal posture was starting to affect other areas of his body.
Considering Josephβs quality of life, we decided to fund a front wheel cart from the amazing Eddie’s Wheels for Pets, to be custom built in the USA from our specialist vets’ measurements for him.
While waiting for this, Joseph underwent surgery to correct his palate to help with breathing problems. Hopefully, once he was mobile and active again, he would be able to thrive without a breathing challenge too!
We have been delighted by the help and expert engineering from overseas. The wheels are light and turn on the spot easily. Once fitted with minor adjustments made to the centre of gravity setting, Joseph was off gaining his confidence from using it, in short, frequent sessions. He’s already much more independently mobile and is gaining a more normal posture.
Joseph is doing so well on his wheels! He recently strolled down to a cafe. These wheels are not only improving his posture and mobility but are helping him to enjoy a normal, pug’s life! πΎ
We will share video updates of Joseph’s progress on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PDWRA

πΒ Ava was laid to rest on 6th September. π
Unfortunately, the challenges life gave her became too much so it was the right decision to help her across the rainbow Bridge. π
She was doubly incontinent and had been born with spinal abnormalities that had required surgery.
PDWRA had invested in Physiotherapy to help Ava gain strength in her legs to try and keep her mobile. This had been of great benefit to her but earlier this year it became apparent that she was losing strength in her back legs. Her quality of life deteriorated over the summer months and it also became clear she had limited vision.

Ava had a wonderful spirit of determination and a love for everyone around her. She had the most beautiful face with expressions it was difficult not to adore. It was sad to witness her deterioration and withdrawal from the things that she had enjoyed in her life like playing with her PDWRA sister, Annie.
It was a pleasure to care for Ava for nearly 3 years and I miss her dreadfully.
I like to think of her running around on her new legs across the rainbow bridge with all her PDWRA family π€π

Josie

Thank you to PDWRA pug owner Lynn, who took it upon herself to hold a fundraising stall at her local village fun day. Here she is with daughter Gemma who raised and donated over Β£100 from their kind efforts! π€
Lynn has a grumble of her own at home, including a deaf pug from adopting a handsome father & son pair.
Their thoughtful, generosity and support, is much appreciated by the PDWRA & our pugs in need! ππΎ

In the blue chariot we have two lovely golden girls. At the front is Pepper, collected from the RSPCA on a cold December evening.
Pepper is 14, unable to walk, with recurrent urine infections and is doubly incontinent. PDWRA looked after most of her healthcare expenses while her devoted foster Mum, Helen, gave her the care she needed. We looked for an equally dedicated forever home but foster Mum decided to adopt Pepper and there truly couldn’t be a more suitable home for her!
To the rear of Pepper in her chariot, is Ruby, collected by the same PDWRA Area-Coordinator from a family home. Ruby will also soon be 14. She has mobility issues and struggles to walk plus is similarly, doubly incontinent. Helen offered to travel cross-country to collect Ruby to foster and is one of those special people who can’t do enough to help including incurring a lot of costs herself. Rubyβs surrender was a very sad experience, as her parents had owned her since a puppy. Sadly, they had a young child who was very ill and any risk of infection from Ruby was too great. However, these two dears became the best companions for each other and Ruby will be remaining there, in her forever home too!

Without the most amazing foster carers, who often drop everything to help pugs in need, follow veterinary management of their care diligently and helped with the donations we receive throughout the year, we wouldn’t be able to give the best lives for deserving souls like these wonderful old dears!
Please donate whenever you can, it will always be appreciated!ππΎ

One of our lovely adoptive homes now, who had sadly lost their beloved pug Pippa to cancer at only 6 years old, hadn’t ever considered a rescue pug, but were put in touch with their local PDWRA Coordinator Jane. She told them about Hughie, who had a brother Louie, both surrendered by an elderly owner who had them since puppies but could no longer cope with them. They were very active & naughty together, π though could be independent from each other too!

They went to see Hughie at his foster home & it was love at first sight! Hughie’s adoptive Mum tells us:
β€οΈ Hughie soon settled in with us; however, it soon became apparent that Hughie needed a little more training; he hated skateboards motorbikes other dogs trundling suitcases and the doorbell! He has improved, but the doorbell is still a work in progress! π¬ He really is the most loving boy though and I thought he would make a great therapy dog. I found a care home that would take him and Hughie was assessed by the vet (fortunately no doorbell at the vets! π
). He passed with flying colours, but then Covid happened.

Iβm looking forward to visiting the home once I am able to, with Hughie. Iβm sure the residents will love him as much as we do. Meantime, he now has an older brother Frank and they absolutely adore each other! β€οΈ

Ziggy’s family sadly had to say goodbye to him. π
His Dad, Nik writes to us to say, “Ziggy had been under close monitoring by our vet for the last couple of years due to his back legs failing him. After becoming doubly incontinent and more recently over the last 3 weeks his front legs starting to weaken, we realized that his quality of life was nowhere near what he deserved so we took the decision to have him pass over to rainbow bridge to be with his wifey Mabel.
We adopted them as a couple from PDWRA and he blessed us with 6 wonderful years. We like to imagine him now frolicking in fields of gold with her forever and all our other dog companions. Thank you to all at the PDWRA who let us adopt them. x ”
We all send our sincere condolences to Ziggy’s family and thank them for giving a bonded-pair a wonderful life together.

Mr Wilson has been looking forward to this music festival since lockdown prevented him from enjoying events like he used to. This will be his 2nd though, since being adopted by PDWRA volunteer Emma.
He’s used to plenty of outdoor activities and sports including marathons and agility competitions.
But how smart does he look in his festive harness!? Looks like he’s having the best time, deservedly so! ππΎ

National Dog Day, is observed annually on August 26. It honours family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day – protecting our families and homes, for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and helping to locate and rescue victims of accidents and tragedy.
This day was founded by author and animal behaviourist, Colleen Paige in 2004. She started this annual recognition day to not only show appreciation for dogs, but to bring attention to the plight of abused dogs and to end puppy farms among other welfare issues.
However, we don’t need an excuse to celebrate our pugs every day do we?!
