National Walking the Dog Day!
Young Percy’s Foster to Forever Home journey!
Where does one start with young Percy?!
Firstly, he is a great little dog, misunderstood and let down by humans unfortunately, in his earlier life.
He was very trainable because he loves treats, fuss and positive reinforcement plus he loves his bum (the top of his tail) being scratched too!
Thankfully he received all the love and attention he deserved from our fosterer and the help of a behaviourist, as all his reactions were purely due to him being terrified! 😪
He is very happy inside, in the home where he feels safe, but anything outdoors scares him, cars especially. He would run into the road and attack cars if he could.
The behaviourist told us that once he’s had an anxious spell (any of his more aggressive reactions) it would take 72 hours for his cortisol levels to calm down, so he would be kept inside for that and only be given treats when he was calm.
A PDWRA home would already have a dog-proof garden, though Percy still needed to slowly get used to new outdoor surroundings. A lot of his behaviour is typical puppy behaviour, barking for attention, stealing socks and chewing things. He barks to be let outside, so he was toilet trained, but still needed to make sure he did go to the toilet or he would then go inside.
All he wants is to sit on your knee and feel safe, like so many pugs, which isn’t entirely practical! Percy just needed structure and discipline. He now sits and waits for his food until you say ‘go’ on then and he races to his bed at night for a treat. He is an amazing little dog, so much fun and just loves cuddles. It just goes to show what time and investment in their care can do to improve their quality of life.
Percy is more than settled in his forever home now. He made sure he took a few of his favourite toys from his wonderful foster home, where they were able to invest in him for his fabulous future ahead!

Coping with winter weather!
What category does your pug fall into?
Still loving their walks despite the weather or the outerwear we choose for them?
or
Can we not even get them out for nature’s needs?! 😉🙄😆💝🐾

Perhaps, by wearing Mums snood?!
or a handsome, snug puffa jacket?!
Winter Walking Hazards including the Wind!
– Keep your dogs off salted roads and paths as much as possible as it can burn their paw pads.
Therefore, for their wellbeing during winter months:
– Inspect pug paws regularly to check for cracked pads, broken nails or snow/salt damage.
– Brush your pug’s coat regularly to distribute natural oils to the skin and prevent dry patches.
– Keep your pug or grumble inside during the chilly winter months – as in hot weather, pugs are not equipped to handle extreme or long exposure to the cold.
– Keep the temperature level. Animals are more sensitive to temperature changes than we are.
– Use protective screens around fireplaces and maintain supervision in the area.
– Reduce their food based on their energy level. Pugs tend to be less active during the winter to conserve energy! 😉😅

Percy’s journey across the pond!
One of our volunteers spotted Percy at a dog pound in Northern Ireland and saw he wasn’t doing very well, not just because he was in kennels, but he was also struggling with significant mobility issues. Our local Area Coordinator was contacted and although couldn’t find a suitable home for his level of care in the region, looked further afield in our network. We found a perfect match, while Percy was now very comfortable and enjoying his new pug friends at our Coordinators home. 💝💙
Sadly, Percy’s journey had to be delayed as it was soon discovered that he had the dreaded kennel cough! As he was highly infectious too, he passed it on to a few of his new friends despite them being vaccinated against it. There are so many different strains! 😣
This was followed by a bout of colitis before all symptoms subsided and he was fit to travel. We put a call out for anyone planning to go across on the ferry and a kind volunteer, John, came forward. He even managed to secure a dog friendly cabin for the sail over! John says Percy was the best co-pilot he ever had. 😉😊
Percy soon settled into his new home where he has an elderly collie companion and PDWRA will still support them with his healthcare needs especially his rear mobility issues, so he can continue to enjoy his best life ahead of him! 💖🐾

New Year adventures for 3-legged Frank!
We told Frank’s story last year after he faced multiple operations to remove a tumour that sadly kept re-appearing in his rear, right leg.
Despite several rounds of chemotherapy that were unsuccessful, his leg was removed.
After a slow recovery for Frank, without ever feeling sorry for himself, just look at him now on his weekend adventures – A super 8K effort from Frank today on a trip to the Painswick beacons!
We’re all so very proud of Frank, not just his adoptive Mum! 🤗💝🐾

Foster Homes Needed in Kent!
We welcome applications to foster or adopt from the whole of the UK. However, if you live in the Kent area, we are in urgent need of foster homes.
Fosterers provide safe, loving homes with any healthcare, rehabilitation or training that is required for the individual needs of surrendered pugs. PDWRA offer full support and guidance, covering all veterinary costs.
Fostering can be for varying periods of time, as required in each pug’s life journey to their best-matched adoptive home.
If you feel you could offer this, please read and apply via: https://pugwelfare-rescue.org.uk/fostering-a-pug/
My name is Fudge…..
Hi there, My name is Fudge.
I am a loving, sweet girl who enjoys nothing more than cuddles on your lap.
Here is some more information that might help me settle me in easier:
Walks – I love going for a walk and get very excited when I see my lead, but if I think the walk is too long or boring, I will lay down and refuse to move so be prepared to carry me on occasions.
My recall is hit and miss which means I don’t get to go off-lead too often!
Sleeping: The kitchen is fine as I have a problem weeing on my own bed and blankets so I’m not trusted in the human’s beds!
Food – I LOVE food but can get a sensitive tummy if something is too rich. My favourites are carrots or strawberries which I have as a treat/snack most days.
Visitors – I have always lived with small children so I’m fine with them but when I see visitors, I will jump all over them!
Words I understand –
OFF = Get down
SIT = If I really must
NO = ?!
LEAVE = I need to be watched
OUT = If the weather is bad, only if I’m forced
I can occasionally turn deaf so these don’t always work but the word NEVER fails and I will always respond to = SWEETIES!
Fudge is very happily adopted now, and this was the cutest note she came to PDWRA with!
We are OPEN for New 2022 Applications!
