Keep your pugs safe for Halloween!

Everyone, two-legged and four, should be able to have a safe, fun, and happy Halloween.

Here are some tips and references to consider:

– Keep chocolate and sweets (many contain xylitol) out of paws reach
– Be careful with lit pumpkins and never leave your dog unattended around them
– If using battery lights in your pumpkins make sure your dog doesn’t get close enough to chew or swallow them
– Be aware of any choking hazards
– Keep Halloween decorations out of their reach or they could become entangled in them
– Trick or treaters and unfamiliar visitors especially in costume can cause alarm to your dog so create a safe quiet place for them to relax.
– Walk your dog before dark to avoid trick or treaters who may scare your dog or cause unnecessary stress.
– Your dog is likely to come into contact with more children than usual – so it is important to prepare for your dog’s reaction accordingly. Also, be prepared for children wanting to touch your dog, which can cause extra stress

It’s useful; to have your vets telephone number to hand should your dog find and eat chocolate, sweets or items which may block its airway. Your vet will need to know what was eaten, when and how much. If your dog eats something they shouldn’t, do not attempt to make them sick unless your vet advises this, as this could cause further problems.

-Also be aware that fireworks are available before Halloween and loud bangs and sudden bright lights may spook your dog. Diwali and Bonfire night are also days away!

Thank You for Ellie – Post-Op Update!

πŸ’– An Update on Ellie! πŸ’–

We would firstly like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and most generous response in donations towards Ellie’s surgery and vet costs – it was overwhelming! πŸ’žπŸΎ

You will remember this little girl was rescued by a young mum, spending all her savings after seeing her advertised on the internet, only to discover she had been used as a breeding machine and required significant veterinary care. 😒

Your generosity has helped Ellie through her first stage of surgery where she underwent a long procedure that included a repair to a large hernia (which turned out to be her uterus), removal of a mass from her neck, to be tested, plus extensive BOAS surgery.

Ellie went through a very challenging recovery after all of this surgery and had to remain in the veterinary hospital for 4 days!

She is now home, making a steady recovery. Ellie is really enjoying being back with her foster family including their pug Rolo, and is even enjoying her new-found tummy tickles again. Rolo hasn’t left her side since, and follows her everywhere making sure she is okay.

After a further few worrying days, the results of the mass removed came back to thankfully confirm it was benign. We couldn’t wish for better news for Ellie, or to update you with!!

Happy National Pug Day!

It’s Pugtober 15th!

Who needs an excuse to celebrate, or share how wonderful our pugs are, however as they are so special, October 15th, every year is dedicated to them!

An Appeal for Ellie, on her road to recovery!

This is Ellie. Her story is of a brave young lady who rescued her from a dreadful life and potentially falling into the wrong hands again, onto her road to recovery, now in our care.

A young mum of 2 very young children answered an advert on the internet for a healthy 3 year old lively pug. She turned up to find a very distressed much older pug, riddled with fleas, with large lumps on her body and had been used as a breeding machine. The young mum made the decision to part with hundreds of pounds just to get her out of there as she didn’t have the heart to leave her.

Ellie was taken straight to the vet, which costed even more than she could afford but she felt she needed to be seen immediately. She then rang us to ask whether PDWRA would take her in so she would be safe forever.

So far, Ellie’s medical issues are many, from eye ulceration, teeth needing extracting, to severe BOAS, lumps that could be cysts or tumours plus a large hernia hanging between her legs. She was covered in flea dirt with overgrown nails so received her first grooming in the loving care of her fosterer in a safe, warm home. She is scared by raised men’s voices and the back door being shut if she is outside – We believe she used to be shut outside on concrete for up to 15 hours a day. Ellie didn’t even possess a harness or lead when she was collected. πŸ˜”

Ellie can’t be exercised either until she has surgery. This is where we need your help please!
Any donation large or small, will add up to help Ellie to receive the treatment she needs, quickly, to ease her discomfort and start to heal. Our vet bills are increasing every month as more pugs like Ellie are needing our help.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and Ellie’s, and will keep you updated on her journey to recovery. πŸ’πŸΎ
