Volunteering.

If you’re considering volunteering locally to you, here are key ways in which you can help our charity.

Only with Volunteers can we achieve what we do for Pugs in Need.

Here’s what the early part of last year’s activity looked like:

This year was unusual, similar to other animal rescue charities, as we had to temporarily close to receiving surrendered pugs, due to the high volume all were experiencing.
The cost of living situation & increasing vet costs are understood to have heavily impacted this trend.
We are in a phased re-opening, starting in our busiest region, the South-East.

  • Home checking

Home checking for PDWRA involves visiting and interviewing an adoptive or foster applicant in your local area.

The purpose of a home check is to try and gather as much information as possible about the applicant, their home, lifestyle and any other resident pets.

You will be sent an ID Lanyard to wear on your visit.

The applicant’s details will be provided to you, and a copy of our home check form with set questions, to guide you on your visit. This will need to be completed in full and returned to your Area Rehoming Co-ordinator.

The decision to pass or fail a home check will be made by the Area Rehoming Co-ordinator.

  • Transporting a pug

Transporting involves the collection/delivery and transportation of a PDWRA pug or sometimes a bonded-pair of pugs.

This can work in a variety of ways, and may require you to collect a surrendered pug from an owner to deliver to a fosterer or adopter.
Occasionally, it may involve being part of a transport chain where you collect and hand the pug to another PDWRA volunteer.

You can specify the sort of distance you would be willing to travel. Fuel costs are reimbursed by the charity if you wish to claim for it.

Sometimes you will be required to oversee the completion of some paperwork to send to your Area Rehoming Co-ordinator, though as much as possible is organised in advance. You will be sent an ID Lanyard to wear.

To Volunteer to Foster:

More than ever, we are in need of NEW foster homes to support the large number of pugs in our care.
We welcome both Short and Long-term Foster carers.

As we match the best environment and care available for each pug’s needs, we may often have a shortage of homes that can support the extra needs that some pugs require, from anxiety, behavioural, medical or special-needs (disabilities), listed here:

We welcome applications from all over the UK though currently have a greater need in regions such as Scotland, the North of England & Wales, as well as Avon & Somerset in the South West.
